GasPrector.com's "Brown Gas" Challenge

If you would like to respond to this challenge, in accordance with the Conditions listed below, please contact us using the contact page, with "Brown Gas Challenge" at the beginning of the message.

On this page you will find the following sections:

Overview and Background

Date the challenge was first published: 10/25/2010

Number of companies accepting the challenge: 0

It is our policy not to accept for publication any article promoting any gas saving technique or product which we believe does not work. We do not want this Article Directory to be used as a vehicle for ripping people off with phony products.

We are indeed being blunt about this, but we do not wish to argue about it.

Continuing to be blunt, we say, Put up or shut up!

We will rescind this policy if any promoter or purveyor of products or services which we consider "questionable" is willing and able to satisfy us that the product or service does indeed work.

Lately, the type of product which we perceive as the biggest scam in gas-saving devices is the "run your car on water" system. Not all such systems are promoted using the term "Brown gas," but we are using that term as a blanket term for all such systems.

As necessary, we will extend this policy to any method, tool, or system for enhancing a motor vehicle's fuel economy which, in our opinion, is without scientific or technical merit.

Policy

We will automatically reject any article which promotes the idea of running a motor vehicle on water, or using electrolysis of water or similar techniques ostensibly for enhancing the vehicle's fuel economy. We will automatically reject any article whose "resource box" links lead the reader to a site which promotes such systems.

We will reject any article which promotes any technique for enhancing a motor vehicle's fuel economy by means of any system or technique which we consider to be scientifically and/or technically unsound.

We will update this page from time to time as necessary to add specific types of products which we consider to be unsound and to which this policy and our challenge will apply.

This policy will remain in effect until at least one party has accepted our challenge and satisfied us that such products actually do work.

The Challenge

The idea is simple, as stated in the overview: "Put up or shut up."

If you can prove to us, as described on this page, that your product does indeed produce a significant improvement in fuel economy for a suitably normal vehicle in suitably normal driving conditions, we will rescind this policy for that type of product, and we will actively promote your product or services on our Web site. Under such conditions, we will accept no remuneration for promoting your product or services. We will promote it for free, for the good of our site visitors, simply because we will know that it is indeed a good and worthwhile product.

General

You must prove to us that your product works. You must provide the vehicle to be used for testing your product, but we will do the testing. You must provide the vehicle to us in unmodified condition so that we can perform a baseline fuel economy test before your product is installed. You must do the installation, conversion, or whatever is required to implement your product or technique, but we will observe the process and document it on video and/or still photos, and with notes as we see fit. You must also provide us with the documentation that accompanies your product, and you must answer any questions we may have about the installation process or about the operation of your product or technique.

At every major step along the way, we will document your answer to our challenge, and our testing of your product, on our blog.

  • Why your vehicle? We don't want to risk our own vehicle in case your product does not work and its installation is not reversible. No arguments. You provide the vehicle.
  • Why don't we install it ourselves? We don't want you to be able to claim afterward that the product failed because we failed to install it properly.
  • Why do we insist on documenting the procedure? If you are claiming, as most proponents of such products do, that your product can be installed by anyone with reasonable mechanical skills, we want you to show us that this is true.

Conditions

  1. We will agree not to disclose your proprietary information in the course of documenting your answer to our challenge, or afterward. However, we must insist on being given enough information to make our own informal assessment of your product and your claims regarding your product. We will sign any reasonable nondisclosure agreements or similar covenants.
  2. Provide a vehicle of your choice for our use in the test. Vehicle must be unmodified from its normal condition and configuration. Vehicle must be a reasonably reliable vehicle, as we will use it in our day-to-day commuting and errands, and for two moderately long road trips, as if it were our own car. Vehicle must be a typical "American family car" (not necessarily of American manufacture), whether a compact, sedan, SUV, van, or pick-up truck, which we must approve as acceptable for our use. Vehicle must be in condition suitable for the commencement of the baseline test, with all maintenance items (fluid levels, tire pressure, wheel alignment, etc.) up to date, and registration and safety inspection documentation current.
  3. Deliver the vehicle to our location in southern New Hampshire (Nashua area) on a Friday or Saturday for the beginning of the "baseline test."
  4. We will drive the vehicle in its unmodified condition, keeping meticulous record of fuel use, other fluids, tire pressure, etc. for one week. This week will include our normal day-to-day driving in city conditions amounting to approximately 35 miles, plus one road trip primarily in highway conditions of approximately 200 to 400 miles. We will provide all gasoline required for this baseline test. We will use whatever grade of gasoline or fuel, and even a particular brand of fuel that you may specify, provided it is readily available in our area. During this test, we will drive the vehicle in a reasonable manner, driving at the posted speed limits as far as permitted by traffic and weather conditions. We will meticulously record each trip in terms of distance, traffic conditions, and time elapsed, so that we can document the manner in which the car is being driven and compare this with the real test in the following week. We will check all fluid levels and tire pressure daily and top off as necessary.
  5. We will make relevant short entries in our blog to document the progress of this baseline testing.
  6. If we determine during this baseline test that the vehicle's performance is unsatisfactory, such as that its fuel economy is not in line with what would be expected of a vehicle of its type, age, and condition, we will terminate the test and declare it a failure.
  7. On the Sunday or Monday afternoon after the one-week baseline test, you will return to our location and perform the installation or modification to implement your product or technique. We will observe the installation and meticulously document and record it.
  8. After your product is installed in the vehicle, we will drive the vehicle for another week. We will attempt to repeat the previous week's conditions as exactly as possible. We will drive the car in a reasonable manner, driving at the posted speed limit as far as permitted by traffic and weather conditions. We will use exactly the same grade of fuel as in the baseline test, and the same brand if possible. We will record each trip in the same level of detail as in the baseline test. The road trip portion of this test will be exactly the same trip as was taken in the baseline test.
  9. We will make relevant short entries in our blog to document the progress of this testing.
  10. After the Monday afternoon after the conclusion of the test, you may recover the vehicle at your convenience. We will provide you with a copy of our raw data as soon as practicable. We will publish the results of our test on our blog, regardless of whether those results support or refute your claim regarding the efficacy of your product. This may constitute two or more blog entries as we perform increasingly detailed analysis of the data.

What's In It for You

"Free Publicity."

All this will cost you is the use of a vehicle for about two weeks, one of your product (which you will get back at the end of the test), and your time to install the product under our supervision.

If your product demonstrates a measurable and significant improvement in fuel economy, you will have an unbiased source of data to support your claims. You will have in us a promotional partner who will advertise your product without compensation.

  1. We will announce the test results in press releases which will prominently feature the name of your company and your product.
  2. We will advertise your product using your banners and your links (without affiliate links, because we're accepting no compensation) on every page of this Web site. That is, both on this Article Directory and on the GasPredictor.com main site.
  3. We will publish our own articles on this site and related article directories describing the performance of your product.
  4. We will rescind our policy prohibiting articles on this subject, and we will begin by publishing as many articles as you want promoting your product. (Note that these articles must conform to our other editorial policies, including the requirement that they be more informative than promotional.)

What's In It for Us

"Nothing"

We have nothing to gain and, frankly, nothing to lose in this "Brown Gas Challenge." If anyone steps up to the challenge and fails, we will have gained nothing but the use of their vehicle for a couple of weeks. If anyone steps up to the challenge and succeeds, we will be required to give up some advertising space on our Web sites, but we're not too concerned about having to follow through with that.

As long as our "Brown Gas Challenge" stands, about the only thing we get out of it is whatever "buzz" it may generate.

We are "preaching" against the "run your car on water" rip-offs. If that gains us some attention in the Web universe, that's fine with us. If it doesn't, we are proud nevertheless to take a stand against those who take undue advantage of other peoples' wishful thinking about scientifically unsound products.

So, you can shut us up by stepping up to our challenge. Meanwhile, you may not use this Article Directory to rip off our Web site visitors with your " snake oil."

If you would like to respond to this challenge, in accordance with the Conditions listed above, please contact us using the contact page, with "Brown Gas Challenge" at the beginning of the message.
